Patrick C. Carter
Born and raised in the Washington DC metropolitan area, I knew from an early age I wanted to "do architecture." With an interest in residential architecture and design, I completed my undergraduate and Masters of Architecture from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.
Academia and its disjunction with the profession of architecture have always been in my forefront. Since 2000, I have been teaching first year design and drafting as well as spearheading several travel programs with The Catholic University of America which has taken me all over North and Central America and Europe.
During my undergraduate and masters program as well as several years after, I worked for a high-end custom residential and retail/boutique firm in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC where I learned the art of custom details and the complexity of designing for, what I like to call, the "family unit."
After leaving the firm in Georgetown, I moved on to the production side of residential architecture where I not only continued to learn to plan spaces within houses and houses within a site, but I also began a focus on residential planned urban developments. Here, the complexities of single-family and town home development as well as being the developers partner were realized and I planned and built large and high-end communities with upwards of 700 homes, along the east-coast.
Now I am working back towards the custom residential world. REVE is the culmination of 12+ years of experience in residential and boutique retail architecture and design. Some of my recent projects include a 15,000 sq.ft. estate home in Virginia, a glass Conservatory and Greenhouse which was built in Europe and shipped and erected on site in the US, a $5mil+ addition and renovation of a historic tutor home in Mclean to several small kitchen and bath renovations and additions ranging from contemporary to classical.
Approach
Reve Design Studio, Inc. feels that architecture is the result of process and unexpected inspiration.
Illustrated by a body of award winning and publicized work, Reve understands that each project is unique. What sets Reve apart is their ability to understand the circumstances of a project, from the client's aspirations, to the program, place, codes and ordinances. It is fundamental that Reve performs this investigation by thoroughly and methodically interviewing clients, staff, and agencies as well as the land, site, and context as it relates to the program.
Contrary to the mythical image of the "artiste" architect, we at Reve are not fussy about the particular style of architecture that tickles one's fancy because we love all architecture. Indeed, over the years, our work has nearly covered the history of architecture in terms of stylistic diversity. What we are most passionately fussy about, however, is a commitment to quality—doing it well and doing it appropriately. While our work speaks in the familiar language of history and tradition, we also strive with our buildings to say something new and meaningful to our own time and circumstance. Our buildings and designs have always drawn upon elegance and the comforts of familiarity subtly mixed with modern sophistication. When you think about the way we live today, it's a natural combination—one may drive the latest Porsche, BMW, or Mercedes, or wear Prada, but we still carry with us the genetics of our ancestry and the memories of our lives. This all combines to make us who we are, and our houses should be a masterfully tasteful and lasting reflection of our having passed through this place.
Reve is licensed to practice Architecture in Washington, DC, Virginia, Maryland and New Mexico. We are members of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) as well as the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Certified Green Professional (CGP) program.
